“I think there’s a perception that there’s more friction than there actually is,” said Ashley Fieglein Johnson, the CFO of Planet Labs, an earth-imaging firm based in San Francisco. The company, which aims “to accelerate humanity toward a more sustainable, secure, and prosperous world by illuminating environmental and social change,” has launched more than 650 satellites that track changes caused by weather, human activity and other factors.
The company sells this data to commercial clients as well as governments and offers discounts for researchers, NGOs and scientists.
“One of the simplistic ways I present this to employees is we have to do well to do good,” Fieglein Johnson said. Publicly traded Planet Labs has been working to narrow its losses in recent quarters, including by shrinking its workforce.
The company is “under the same pressures as any other company,” its CFO said. Planet Labs’ share price is up by more than 250% since the beginning of the year after its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization turned positive in late 2024.
